There have been an infinite number of words said and spoken on the subject of the Coronavirus pandemic during the last few months. It has totally consumed our lives, not merely the disease itself but the ramifications and effects that have been brought upon us. We are going to publish a series of articles on how COVID-19 has affected 4Syte, its clients, its people and the wider SME community and businesses in general. In some ways we have had a wider effect too, but we will cover those subjects later.
It seems everyone has become an expert on COVID-19, and many have resorted to what I think should be the eighth deadly sin – that of ‘blame’. Blame for things not going to plan, blame for staying at home, blame for going to work – the list is endless. Blame is the most negative of sins, often whipped up by the media and usually as a result of that equally hideous skill, ‘Hindsight’. How brilliant people become with the knowledge of hindsight.
So, we are faced on many levels with a new virus which no one at the outset really knew what it would do. Suddenly, on every level we had to start making decisions. On a world level, Government level, institutional level, corporate level, SME level and family and personal level. It is exhausting just listing them and they are all decisions that would not have been part of our ‘road map’ business plans for 2020.
That is thousands of decisions, many incredibly complicated which affects everyone’s life short, medium and long term. Now I do not know anyone who makes the right decision all the time. I know I don’t. Sometimes there isn’t always a right or wrong decision – the killer is often making no decision and allowing the consequences to wash over you.
The key is to make an informed and decisive decision based on the facts in front of you and then commit to that decision. Unfortunately, hindsight does not tell you if the decision you did not make would have worked. Only the press and social media can tell you that!
All you can do is face up to the decisions you make and try and make the outcome as positive as possible. With COVID-based decisions it is a long game and there will be battles lost along the way, but I really do hope and feel that the outcome at the end will be positive for as many as possible.
Let’s not blame anyone for the decisions made along the way, but admire the courage in making some decisions and taking responsibility for other people’s lives. Let’s take what we have learnt as a positive so something like this can never happen again. If that is a cleaner world, where we all respect and look out for each other, and our research, scientific and medical capabilities are world beating and our businesses are booming then I am all for taking some positives out of this.
Our next article will tell you what 4Syte has done to operate and look after its clients thus far and the economic effects of this. In future reads we will see how our many SMEs across all business sectors have fared, and the curve balls and assistance thrown in along the way and see how business is coming out on the other end.
Then we will get the crystal ball out and predict where we will all be down the road. Don’t worry – we are 4Syte, we have foresight, and we are positive about our future!
